Favorite Town

(5)·By Somerled M·Psychology· Jun 2026
I was initially very nervous coming to St Andrews. I used to live on the Isle of Skye, so it was quite a change for me. However, this town was the perfect transition into the wider world. I’ve met so many amazing people, and although there aren’t any proper clubs, there is still a great nightlife with more of a focus on house parties and pub nights. My course is going really well. I was originally doing computer science but switched to psychology as I grew to enjoy it more. I stay in private accommodation now, but in first year I stayed in halls. It was difficult in the beginning, but I got really close with my flatmates. The only downside is the lack of an arts culture; there seems to be an emphasis on STEM and only some of the humanities. Regardless, I would definitely recommend St Andrews!

Medicine at St Andrews

(5)·By Emily M·Medicine· Jun 2023
I will always recommend St Andrews as the top uni to study medicine. Not only is it the only uni that awards a bachelors degree after 3 years, but also the only one to offer full body dissection from week 1 of the course!
St Andrews in general is a beautiful place to study and, despite what people may think, the social life is too-notch!

Fun, supportive uni

(5)·By Ray L·Mathematics· Jun 2023
There is so much support available from staff and peers! Everyone is really friendly and there are so many societies to join! There is a big focus on mental health and a large student union striving to make an impact on the university and surrounding community. There are many fun traditions to take part in and a big history. The town is beautiful full of old stone buildings that you might have lectures in, the science building are modern and there are a lot of study areas. The library is huge with various study spaces and there is a new sports facility with everything in it! It's an awesome university you should definitely consider coming here!

Mathematics / Statistics, Year 2

(5)·By Maggie W·Mathematics· Jul 2021
Freshers week was so unique at St Andrews university! We have such interesting events at our union and house parties that arent like any other. Even compared to the nights out ive been to in London back home, i actually prefer it at St Andrews. I stayed in Andrew Melville hall during first year and it was a great experience. We had such a tight knit community and there'd be such fun events like free bars and speed friending. I was in a corridor with 7 other people and they also became my academic sisters! The facilities were very good in my opinion. Everything is so close in town so very easy to access. This year ive been to the gym much more frequently and am really enjoying using the facilities! I could tell right from the start that my lecturers were passionate about the subjects they were teaching. The course is challenging but we also have great support from our tutors. Everyone is there to learn and thrive which creates such a conducive environment for academia. St Andrews is such a special town, it's a really tight knit community and you'll be sure to bump into a few people you know on your tescos trip. It means the nights out are so fun as you'll never know which house party you'll end up in. We are also surrounded by 3 beautiful beaches which is such a bonus

Medicine, Year 2

(5)·By Lynette T·Medicine· Jul 2021
Freshers week was amazing! I manage to make a lot of new friends and settle into uni well! Medicine is tough but I'm hanging on! I stayed in David Russell Apartment in St Andrews and it was a lovely experience despite being slightly far away from town. The library is amazing, it's 3 levels and there's a silent section which allow students to really concentrate. The student sports hall/ gym is really nice too! it has a lot of different facilities and equipments. Medicine is great in St Andrews, the lecturers have really good slides and deliver their lectures to a very high standards. St Andrews does not have much of a city life, but it is never boring! We have a lot of house parties, pubs and bars and definitely the student union that we all end up at the end of the night.

History, Year 1

I honestly can't imagine a better place to live/study than St Andrews. It's literally Hogwarts- the buildings are beautiful, you're right by the coast, and everything has this sort of magic to it. Yeah, the work is intense, but here everybody works hard and plays ever harder. The nights out are awesome, and you soon learn the hidden tricks to have a great night (esp. 50p toastie Fridays).

Review of St Andrews

St Andrews is a beautiful town with a rich history and stunning scenery. The university adds a vibrant atm

(4)·By O D·Mathematics· Jun 2026
The best thing about St Andrews is the social aspect; I don’t think I’ve ever met a single person who doesn’t take part in some charmingly niche society. Everything is within a 20-minute walk in St Andrews, which, combined with the beautiful beaches and surrounding scenery, makes it such a lovely little bubble to live in. My course is exceptionally well taught, and my friends across humanities, divinity, and STEM faculties share this sentiment. If I could improve one thing about the university, it would be living costs, particularly rent prices. To live in a nice property or the town centre, £1,000 monthly rent is not uncommon, and the golf tourism drives up the prices of pubs and shops in town, so we lack truly student-friendly places to eat, shop, and socialise. But these small negatives don’t even begin to outweigh the positives of my student experience—I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else.

St Andrews: The Best Choice I Ever Made!

(4)·By Lily C·Psychology· Jun 2025
St Andrews is the most inspiring place I have ever visited. The people around me are so kind, loving, and inviting. Everyone here is hard-working and dedicated, withholding judgment for their peers, and it is all about lifting each other up and celebrating successes. There are so many opportunities and experiences for students, ranging from societies working with charities to free guest speaker events from leaders in multiple specialties. It is so freeing, especially within your first two years, being able to choose elective modules, as at 18 we are still very young to be deciding how we want to live the rest of our lives. The social scene is far better than what some might think of in a small town, with amazing social events, bars, and even some clubs. If you’re looking for something with a bustling city life, Dundee is only a free bus ride away, and the same with Edinburgh, right on the coast. Meeting so many international students, St Andrews is the best place I’ve ever chosen.
