My honest experience at uni

(5)·By Marilyn I·Medicine· Jun 2026
I had no expectations going into university at first, but it wasn’t terrible. Honestly, my student life is not anything exciting. It’s a pattern and schedule: university, study, home. I don’t have a social life because I don’t like socialising much. The only social life I have revolves around church. My accommodation is alright; we rarely have activities. The only communal area is the kitchen, which people barely use for cooking or to chill and chat, because second year is hitting everyone. My course is great. At first, I didn’t enjoy it, but now I’m starting to like it. My university is right behind my accommodation, so there isn’t much commuting. Rating my university experience, I give it an 8 out of 10. I love the peace and quiet.

Really great University

(5)·By Holly F·Business· Jun 2024
I transferred to Gloucester University in my third year. Everyone was very welcoming and the lecturers were always on hand to answer any questions. There were plenty of opportunities to learn about your course outside of the classroom and to share experiences with peers.

Good uni and lovely place to live

(5)·By Anna C·Psychology· Jun 2023
I went to Brighton Uni for a year before Uni of Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire wins hands down. I was based on the Cheltenham Francis Close Halll campus and the accomodation in first year was great, the course was well taught and enjoyable and the people in Cheltenham are very friendly. The nightlife is great and there is always lots to do when you aren't studying. The campus is beautiful with lots of societies and clubs that you can join. I would highly recommend University of Gloucestershire, especially the Francis Close Hall campus.

I really enjoyed it! Made loads of friends! I really enjoyed my accommodation I ended up living with people from my building in the second year where we rented a house Lovely, library Is 247 and my studios opened at 8 and closed at 11 so it was perfect for me It's a wonderful course that's assisted me in making key decisions about my future. Staff are wonderful would even consider them friends It was fun! We have 2 wetherspoons and a bunch of clubs (also some very cute bars)

Sports / Sports Science, Year 3

All small qualifications were gained in the first couple of weeks where it would've been nice to get settled in first before thinking about work A mix of on campus and off campus accommodation at different standards of living All facilities are well manned and still led for all needs The opportunity to contribute to the course and in lectures enabled understanding of subject to be much clearer Ease of access made it much more enjoyable when being in a city centre as not as much travelling is needed

Highly recommend

Student life was really good. I have met a brilliant community and made friends. The commute was easy when I was in halls, as I was only five minutes away, and now I’m just a ten-minute drive from campus, which is convenient with my car and onsite parking. The accommodation was okay, although I did feel crowded in a flat with many people and a small kitchen. The social scene is active, and there are a good number of societies.

University experience as a fresher

(4.8)·By Izzi B·Physiotherapy· Jun 2023
All my lecturers have been very welcoming and encourage us to ask for any help we've needed with assignments/exams.
I also am part of the university netball club and play in the bucs leauge, the club was also very welcoming and made me feel comfortable.
I would encourage students to join a society as it helps you meet new people.

I chose to live in halls of residence for my first year to gain the full experience. Fortunately I got to live in halls rhat was less than a 5 minute walk to my lectures. My room and most.of the rooms on campus although we're single beds, we're very spacious and all the bathrooms even non accessible ones had lots of space. The rooms comprised on an onsuit, bed, built in desk and walldrobe space, and a desk chair. My campus was a 10 minute walk into town which ment it was very easy for me to go out with friends. There are lots of restaurants, places to shops and a couple great night clubs and pubs/bars so the night life in Cheltenham was always on point!

The campuses I visited (Francis Close and Oxstols) were always clean, a little hard to navigate but once you were able to figure out the room labelling system it was fairly straight forward.

The course I took was Early Childhood Studies (BA Hons), I was able to get so much out of this with my 6 weeks work experience each year, yhe lectures were fairly standard although each lecturer did their best to add something special to the modules, although covid did seriously mess things up in my final year with the support of my dissertation lecturer and the emails of all the course leaders I was able to complete my final year with minor inconveniences!

Whilst I was at the university they had a great support system for those who may need extra help. Unfortunately due to cut backs and inflation I think this has been reduced a bit.

Overall, I would definitely recommend.

Journalism, Year 3

Fun, lots of getting to know people on the course, in halls, at clubs and organised pub crawls. We had Freshers Fortnight so there was a good opportunity to settle in and take part in lots of activities. I lived in halls on campus which was decent, easy to get to lectures and met some good people. There's also more modern halls off campus that are popular but slightly more expensive. There's lots of student houses and usually students live nearby to other students. Libraries are 24hour so very accessible, student union used to have a coffees but has moved to self service. There's a bar on campuses but usually they're quite quiet, most people go out into town for drinks as it's near to uni. There's sports facilities in Gloucester and a gym at Pittville accommodation campus. Small course and very personal, every lecturer knows the students and you get to know your course mates early on. Lectures are a mixture of practical and academic (meaning some are in person and some are online atm) and you can choose modules that are closer to what you want to do in second and third year. I feel like I've had more support from lecturers than I've heard about from friends in other unis. Small so not lots of options for different clubs but that made nights out fun as you'd usually see people you know. One main club that people go to but lots of options for bars in Cheltenham if you'd prefer a bar or pub crawl. If you wanted a bit of change you could easily get a bus to Gloucester to spend an evening at the Quays.
