### Why choose this course at Sussex?
* Develop visual literacy for today’s age of image saturation and misinformation, building expertise for careers ranging from heritage to content creation.
* Gain practical skills through real-world projects, curating exhibitions, responding to live briefs and producing professional outputs, with our masterclasses and industry links.
* Engage with innovative methods across the ages. Develop critical thinking, cultural awareness and communication skills for creative and cultural industries.
With us, you’ll combine critical curiosity with creative practice. You’ll explore how visual culture shapes the way we think, feel and act in the world today. From Pre-Raphaelite jewellery and global environmental art to advertising, AI, and documentary film, you’ll develop the visual literacy to decode and interpret a range of visual languages. This is an essential skill in an age defined by image saturation and misinformation.
On this course, you’ll:
* interrogate the role of cinema and art in shaping identity, memory, and belonging
* engage with pioneering methodologies that foreground feminist and queer histories, decolonisation, institutional critique, and sensory and material approaches
* challenge dominant narratives and bring fresh perspectives to today’s cultural, creative and heritage sectors
* explore cinema’s global impact, from its historical roots to its contemporary evolution, considering its connections with politics, technology and society
* analyse your favourite film genres while discovering new ones, becoming a flexible and confident thinker able to express complex ideas with clarity and creativity
* take part in a study trip to Rome.
Throughout your degree, employability is embedded at every stage. You’ll develop projects that combine critical analysis with practical skills in planning and audience engagement. You’ll also benefit from strong links with our partners, including Towner Eastbourne and Brighton’s international film festival. Masterclasses with visiting filmmakers and curators, placement opportunities and study abroad options will broaden your horizons.
When you graduate, you’ll have a broad, versatile skillset in critical thinking, cultural awareness, impactful communication and creative problem-solving.
At Sussex, you won’t just study Art History and Film Studies – you’ll help shape their future and build your own.
