Learn in dedicated creative spaces
You’ll have your own studio space alongside access to extensive specialist facilities, including printmaking workshops, woodworking equipment, installation spaces, life drawing studios and industry-standard digital media suites. You’ll be supported by a rigorous programme of contextual and professional studies, helping you connect your studio practice with contemporary art, critical thinking and the wider creative industries.
Learn from artists and creative professionals
Alongside our expert academic team and specialist technicians, you’ll engage with visiting artists and creative professionals, including our Visiting Professor, Ryan Gander RA OBE.
The University of Suffolk was ranked among the UK's top institutions for Art and Design teaching quality in The Times Good University Guide 2026, recognising the quality of our teaching and learning experience.
Teaching combines practical workshops, small-group seminars and one-to-one studio tutorials, giving you regular opportunities for individual feedback and personalised support.
Gain experience beyond the studio
Throughout your studies, you’ll have opportunities to take part in exhibitions, residencies and commissioned projects both within the University and through our connections with arts organisations, charities, heritage institutions and businesses, including National Trust, Colchester and Ipswich Museums, First Light Festival, SPILL Festival, The Art Station, Asylum Studios, and Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
You’ll develop entrepreneurial and professional skills through participation in exhibitions, live briefs, business planning and funding applications. These experiences help you to graduate with the confidence to establish your career in the creative industries. Our students’ achievements have been recognised through prestigious awards, including the Freelands Painting Prize and the John Ruskin Prize.
Find inspiration in Suffolk and beyond
Suffolk provides a rich source of inspiration, with its distinctive landscapes, ecology, heritage and cultural communities. You’ll have opportunities to engage directly with the region’s internationally significant ecology and heritage, including through residencies in places such as Orford Ness. Based in Ipswich, you’re also within easy reach of London, providing access to world-class galleries, museums and cultural institutions through organised course trips and independent visits.
