Course description
Our one-year MSc Physics course will deepen your understanding of the Universe through topics at the cutting edge of physics research.
Whether you want to advance your understanding of the topics you found most interesting during your undergraduate studies or gain the skills needed to achieve your goals, our range of optional modules allow you to focus on the topics that are most important to you. Through these modules, you’ll have the opportunity to explore areas such as particle physics, semiconductor physics, quantum computing, dark matter and cosmology.
One of the biggest parts of your degree is a year-long research project. You’ll investigate an important issue or problem in a research area of your choice, working under the supervision of an active researcher who is an expert in your chosen area.
Examples of recent dissertation topics include:
* Data analysis with the ATLAS experiment
* Calibrating liquid argon neutrino detectors with cosmic-ray muons.
* Searching for rare interactions with liquid argon neutrino detectors
* Sustainability in particle physics
* Design simulations for the XLZD dark matter experiment
* Novel semiconducting and dielectric materials for advanced nanophotonics (experimental + computational)
* Location imaging using quantum estimation theory
* Strong light-matter interactions in semiconductor photonic structures
* Quantum-dot single-photon source
* Life's complicated: How can physics help?
* Encapsulation and stability of perovskite solar cells
* Microstructure formation in mixtures
You’ll gain expertise that can be applied to some of the biggest challenges in science and technology. You’ll develop technical skills and specialist knowledge, such as computer programming, data analysis, nanotechnology fabrication, and experimental electronic and optical equipment operation.
You’ll also review research literature; design and conduct research using experimental, qualitative and quantitative research techniques; and gain experience communicating your findings verbally and in writing.
Through this MSc, you’ll develop a solid understanding of both the theory and hands-on skills required in physics. You’ll gain the foundation needed to succeed, whether you want to work in research or industry, or apply your knowledge in other fields such as software and computing, data science, finance and consultancy, or public administration.
