Are you passionate about cinema, media and visual storytelling, and keen to understand how film and digital media shape the world around us while creating your own work in industry-standard facilities? The Film and Media BA at Kent brings together creative film practice, media production and critical study, allowing you to explore your passions and prepare for a future career across film, television, online broadcasting and the wider creative and cultural industries.
You will develop skills in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, podcasting, marketing, curation, film and media analysis and more, working on practical projects that mirror industry practices as you create films, podcasts, pitches and portfolios. You will use our fully equipped Film Studio, Sound Studio, production design workshop and dedicated edit suites, and experiment with a range of media formats in our industry-standard facilities, including our on-campus cinema.
Alongside your creative practice, you will study the history and theory of film and media, from silent cinema to streaming platforms, independent film to Hollywood, social media to digital activism. You will explore how media and film represent, influence and challenge the way we think about identity, race, gender, sexuality, disability and class and how we can use digital media to change the world for the better.
Teaching is delivered by internationally recognised researchers and practitioners who bring scholarly depth, professional experience and real-world insight to the classroom. With excellent links to film professionals and film bodies, such as the British Film Institute, Arts Council England, the Independent Cinema Office and Kent Film you’ll benefit from guest lectures, workshops, and placements, giving you real-world opportunities and a fantastic industry network when you graduate.
You can choose to add options such as a Year in Industry or a Year in Television and Online Broadcasting, gaining real work experience and learning how to make content for films, TV, online and social media channels alongside experienced professionals.
