Early Modern History MSc

This Masters focuses on the late 15th to 18th centuries, providing opportunities to explore social, political, religious and cultural historical themes across wide geographic and chronological ranges in a university with extensive library, museum and archive collections for this period. Experts in Early Modern Scotland, England, Europe, Africa, and the Americas contribute to our teaching. You will take a core course in Research, Resources and Skills alongside other History students and five optional courses.<br/><br/><strong>WHY THIS PROGRAMME</strong><br/><br/><br/>• Glasgow offers exceptional resources for the historian, including our university museum, The Hunterian, Scotland’s oldest public museum with over a million items, and our library, one of Europe’s oldest and largest university libraries, with extensive collections from the medieval to the present.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• The Hunterian provides access to primary source materials in fields such as fine art, numismatics and ethnography, while the library offers collections like the Baillie Collection, which contains printed medieval and modern sources on Scottish, Irish, and English history.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Members of staff teaching on this programme have close links with the city’s world-class museums.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Early Modern History at Glasgow is a dynamic and supportive research community with an increasingly global perspective, where you’re encouraged to take part in many research-led initiatives such as seminar programmes, reading and research groups.<br/><br/><br/><br/><strong>PROGRAMME STRUCTURE</strong><br/><br/>You will take:<br/><br/>One core course<br/>Five optional courses. These should be split over the two semesters with two taken in one of the semesters and three taken in the other. With the permission of the programme convenor and subject to availability, the options taken may include courses from other subjects.<br/><br/>You will also produce a dissertation.<br/><br/>**Semester 1<br/>Core course**<br/><br/><br/>• Doing History: Sources and Skills for Historians<br/><br/><br/><br/><strong>Two or three optional courses</strong> (which can include but are not limited to Early Modern History).<br/>Early Modern History courses include:<br/><br/><br/>• The Global History of Inequalities<br/><br/><br/><br/>• The Medievalists: the Middle Ages in 20th century Eastern and Central Europe <br/><br/><br/><br/><strong>Semester 2</strong><br/><br/><strong>Two or three optional courses</strong> (which can include but are not limited to Early Modern History).<br/>Early Modern History courses include:<br/><br/><br/>• Military Scotland in the Age of Proto-globalization, c.1600-c.1800<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Medieval Palaeography: An Introduction to Reading Medieval Documents<br/><br/><br/><br/><strong>Other courses offered by History and available to you include:</strong><br/>• Issues, Ideologies And Institutions Of Modern Scotland<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Gender, Politics And Power<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Gender, Culture and Text<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Making a Living: Work, Gender and Society 1700-1850<br/><br/><br/><br/>Please note the availability of a particular course depends on student numbers and patterns of staff availability. Not all courses will be available every year.<br/><br/><strong>Summer</strong><br/>Dissertation (MSc History)<br/><br/><strong>CAREER PROSPECTS</strong><br/><br/>The research skills and methods you’ll gain on this programme give you the transferable skills you need for positions in the public and private sectors, including heritage policy and projects, media and teaching. The programme is also a good foundation for a PhD.
