Crucial for clinical diagnosis of diseases and appropriate treatment of patients, Biomedical Science is vital to the operation of the NHS and related health industries.<br/><br/><strong>WHY THIS PROGRAMME</strong><br/><br/><br/>• Experience learning a wide range of modern molecular biology techniques required to pursue a research career in biomedical science.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• An ideal introduction for overseas students who may wish to proceed to PhD studies in the UK, Europe or the USA.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting, in part, the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Research training for students intending to proceed to a career in biomedical sciences, either directly as a Biomedical Scientist or through a PhD.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Similar to the MRes Biomedical Sciences, but with more teaching in the first part of the programme, and one research project.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Gain valuable practical research experience by using the skills and techniques acquired during the programme to complete an in depth research project.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Main Campus Location<br/><br/>Mainly undertaken at the Gilmorehill Campus in the West End of Glasgow, with secondary teaching locations being the Garscube Campus to the north west of the city and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on the southside of the city. Both are easy to get to by bus, subway or car. <br/><br/><strong>PROGRAMME STRUCTURE</strong><br/><br/>The overall aims of the programme are:<br/>- to provide students with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to pursue a career in laboratory research.<br/><br/><br/>- to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of advanced techniques used in modern biomedical sciences research.<br/><br/><br/>- to provide students with the opportunity to practice research skills in the laboratory by completing an extensive research project in an area of their choice.<br/><br/><br/><strong>Core Courses include:</strong><br/>Higher Skills in Biomedical Sciences<br/>MSc Biomedical Sciences Project<br/>Presentation skills in the biomedical sciences<br/>The Molecular Genetics of Disease<br/><br/><strong>Optional Courses may include:</strong><br/>Animal Models of Disease<br/>Bio-Imaging for Research Scientists<br/>The Cancer Microenvironment and Biomarkers<br/>Clinical Genomics<br/>Current trends and challenges in biomedical research and health<br/>Diagnostic technologies and devices<br/>Emerging viruses<br/>Genome Editing<br/>Identification of Disease-Causing Genetic Variants<br/>Introduction to Medical Communications<br/>Neuroinflammation in health and disease<br/>Omic Data Analysis and Visualisation, using R, for Biologists<br/>Omic analyses for the biomedical sciences: from genomics to metabolomic<br/>SNP Assay Design and Validation<br/>Technology Transfer and Commercialisation of Bioscience Research<br/><br/><strong>Programme alteration or discontinuation</strong><br/>The University of Glasgow endeavours to run all programmes as advertised.
