Sports & Exercise Science is about understanding how our bodies survive the extreme stresses imposed upon them during sporting activities performed under a wide range of environmental conditions.

We are ranked 1st in the UK for Anatomy and Physiology in The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

Sports and Exercise Science includes the study of the bodys responses to exercise and the adaptations that occur in response to regular exercise. Sports and Exercise Science also explores the role of regular modest levels of physical activity and nutrition in maintaining health through the prevention and treatment of disease and enhancement of wellbeing throughout the life cycle.

Exercise involves the integrated actions of all the bodys systems, and a knowledge of physiology, biochemistry and nutrition is essential to understand how individuals respond to and adapt to the stress of exercise. The sports and exercise sciences are broadly based, and encompass both basic and applied science from the whole body to the molecular level.

After developing fundamental knowledge of medical and sports and exercise science and an understanding of the link between exercise and health, students will be given the chance to pursue specific issues covering different aspects of exercise performance, physical activity, health, physical activity, psychology and nutrition.
