The BSc (Hons) Viticulture, Oenology & Business Management is a future‑focused wine degree designed to prepare graduates for careers across the UK and international wine industry. Combining viticulture (grape growing), oenology (winemaking), sensory evaluation, and business management, the programme equips students with the scientific, technical, and commercial skills needed to succeed in vineyard, winery, and wine business environments.
Informed by the National Wine Competency Framework and developed with industry input, this degree reflects the needs of the modern wine sector. Students gain hands‑on experience through Plumpton’s commercial vineyards, onsite winery, laboratories, and Wine Research Centre, alongside applied learning in wine finance, marketing, supply chains, and ethical sales.
At Levels 5 and 6, students can tailor their module choices to align with their career ambitions, allowing greater focus on either applied viticulture and oenology or wine business and management, while graduating with a single integrated award.
The programme follows the seasonal rhythm of the northern hemisphere wine cycle, with later starts at Levels 5 and 6 to align with harvest activity. This structure supports industry work placements during the harvest season (typically June to late October), enhancing employability and professional readiness.
Graduates are well prepared for roles including winemaker, vineyard manager, vineyard consultant, quality control or laboratory analyst, wine finance and business management roles, global wine trade, marketing, and supply chain management, as well as progression to postgraduate study, including the MRes (Science) Viticulture & Oenology.
Plumpton College is the UK’s leading provider of wine education, delivering wine programmes for over 40 years, home to the Wine Centre of Excellence, and recipient of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2024) for its contribution to the English and Welsh wine industry. The degree is validated by the University of Greenwich and forms part of the Faculty of Engineering & Science.
