With us, you’ll explore drama, fiction and poetry from the 17th century right up to today, discovering how texts reflect the societies that produced them and how they continue to shape the world we live in. As you progress, you’ll have the freedom to tailor your studies to the topics you’re most passionate about, from creative writing and film, to cultural theory or writing from places like the USA, Ireland, Africa, India and the Caribbean. You’ll learn from award winning writers, leading researchers and critics who bring their expertise, research, and fresh ideas to every class.
Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) is a hands‑on branch of applied linguistics, and this course focusses on helping you develop real teaching skills that you can use in classrooms and workplaces around the world. You’ll explore how languages are learned, discover different teaching approaches, and find out what makes effective communication, gaining a strong understanding of both language and culture as you go.
Manchester is a UNESCO City of Literature, and alongside your academic work, you’ll be part of a vibrant literary community, with access to readings, festivals, research events and opportunities to build your own creative network and gain inspiration. It’s also a city where over 200 languages are spoken so you’ll be immersed in a city full of language learners. Whether you dream of a career in publishing, media, education, the arts or something completely different, this course helps you develop the creativity, communication and analytical skills that employers are looking for, and sets you up for a future full of possibility.
A standout feature of the degree is the chance to work towards the internationally recognised Trinity Cert TESOL qualification, one of only two globally accepted TESOL teaching credentials. It’s a valuable addition that strengthens your CV and helps prepare you for an international career.
