Military history is more than a record of battles and weaponry, it’s a powerful lens through which we can understand how conflict has shaped societies, economies, and ideas from the medieval world to today. Our Military History programme invites you to explore the stories behind the headlines, uncovering the human, social, and political dimensions of warfare across different times and places.
This course is your opportunity to look beyond the battlefield. You’ll examine how armed conflict has influenced the development of states and communities, and consider the ethical and political questions that arise in times of war. From the evolution of military institutions to the lived experiences of those involved, on land, at sea, in the air, and within civilian life, you’ll gain a rich, critical perspective on the forces that have shaped our world.
You’ll be encouraged to think independently, ask challenging questions, and engage in real historical research alongside our expert academic team. In your final year, you’ll have the chance to pursue your own interests through a research-based dissertation, developing the skills to analyse evidence, build compelling arguments, and share your insights with confidence.
Whether you’re fascinated by strategy, interested in the impact of technology, or curious about the social consequences of conflict, this programme will help you develop the analytical and research skills to understand the complexities of military history and its ongoing relevance today.
