The BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology prepares students to take on those challenges, equipping them with skills relevant to a broad range of careers. Graduates progress into the conservation and animal care sectors, as well as postgraduate study.
This course provides students with a relevant foundation degree or HND the opportunity to 'top-up' to a full BSc (Hons) bachelor's degree. The programme is available as either a one-year full-time or two-year part-time course.
The flexible course structure allows students to develop their own academic profile through optional modules and research project choices. This provides a high level of autonomy, enabling students to tailor the programme to their interests and career aspirations. The course is ideal for students from a range of backgrounds including zoology, animal management, ecology and conservation.
Modules cover subjects including wildlife conservation, animal behaviour, impacts of disease and science communication.
The programme develops skills and knowledge that are highly relevant to future employment, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability. Graduates leave with the ability to apply balanced and critical thinking while placing conservation and sustainability at the heart of decision-making.
Assessment
Assessments are varied to help students develop a wide range of transferable skills and may include reports, essays, presentations, posters, podcasts, video presentations, tests and exams. All students complete an Honours research project, allowing them to specialise in an area of particular interest.
Progression
Graduates are well-equipped to enter a range of roles within the zoological and conservation sectors, including positions with organisations such as Wildlife Trusts, RSPB, Woodland Trust, Natural England, the Environment Agency and international NGOs. Career opportunities may include Communications or Education Officer, Wildlife or Development Officer, Community Engagement Officer, Wildlife or Reserve Warden, Project Officer or Manager, Advisor or Consultant Ecologist, Environment Officer, Research Technician and Field Researcher.
For those wishing to continue their studies, Newquay University Centre also offers an MSc Conservation Project Management programme, available to study full-time or part-time. This specialist postgraduate course enables graduates to build advanced conservation, leadership and project management skills while continuing to study in Cornwall. Applications are made directly through the Cornwall College website.
