Applied Equine Management (Coaching) Foundation Degree in Science - FdSc

This programme is designed to develop excellent equine practical management skills underpinned with sound academic knowledge to promote the health and well-being of horses whilst enhancing welfare and performance.

You will study a breadth of modules surrounding equine management and undertake a vast amount of practical experience on our busy commercial equine centre to be well prepared to enter a variety of applied roles in the industry.

The coaching pathway offers excellent preparation for those looking to gain skills in developing the performance of the horse and rider dynamic, with applied coaching techniques developed throughout the programme as well as underpinning of science to inform training of both the human and equine athlete.

Students can access free British Horse Society exam training onsite during their studies, the examination cost and BHS membership is an additional cost (exams can be undertaken onsite).

Coures Aims

Learning and Teaching Approach\
For all modules, theory lectures are delivered that aim to deliver the core content and provide the underpinning knowledge. To complement the theory lectures, students have group seminars / practical sessions that are used to reinforce concepts delivered theoretically, utilising excellent laboratory facilities and equine centre.

The teaching methods focus on facilitating a student centred approach to enhance the independent learning that takes place outside of the classroom. Within work based learning modules students undertake weekly yard experience with both academic and commercial instructors, developing both industry and transferable skills.

Contact Time\
FULL TIME:\
You will have approximately 12-16 hours of contact time each week, including lectures, seminars, practicals and tutorials. This is inclusive of four hours experience per week at our commercial Equine Centre at level 4 and two hours per week at level 5.\
You are also expected to carry out a significant amount of private study in addition to contact time (25-30 hours a week).

PART TIME:\
You will have approximately 6-11 hours of contact time each week, including lectures, seminars, practicals and tutorials. This is inclusive of four hours experience per week at our commercial Equine Centre.\
You are also expected to carry out a significant amount of private study in addition to contact time (18-20 hours a week).

You can expect to receive your timetable during induction week.

Progression\
This programme prepares you to go on to further study within areas such as teaching, BHS qualifications and industry careers such as performance analysis. You are also able to progress to top up to the BSc (Hons) Equine Sports Science and Coaching here at UCBB.

Careers

Upon graduating from this programme you could progress into a wide variety of areas including yard and facility management as well as teaching/lecturing, within retail companies, product manufacturers and welfare organisation. Practical skill development will allow you to consider self-employment.
