Why do you want to study this course or subject?

My interest in law stemmed from my enthusiasm to understand how the law is administered and the impact it has on people's lives. This led me to wanting to understand how the law was initially created and the factors that influence the initiation of different legislation. I aspire to pursue a career in the Legal sector, preferably as a solicitor. Furthermore, wanting to do a law degree has sprung from current and world affairs within the news and the effect within politics, policies and laws that stem from those events. I am excited at the prospect of studying law at university for three years and learning about the many different areas of law and the skills required to excel. By studying law, my desire, at university, my drive and motivation will increase dramatically as I am certain that this is where I want to be.

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

Studying history has enabled me to see how the law has differed worldwide during different time periods. Also, the impact the British Legal system has and the concept of the rule of law has been the foundation for many countries. Wider reading has widened my knowledge about the legal system such as, G. Williams' "Learning the Law" which I thought showed me the basic foundations of law and what the legal system consists of. The Law of Tort seems intriguing to me and I would love to find out more about how civil wrongs could affect another person which I will be gaining further insight during my degree. Excellent communication skills are essential for me. For example, listening which is shown through my Saturday day job at Global Tutors and Coaches which involves working with younger children who are preparing for their SAT exams. Public speaking and being ready to debate on a variety of issues seems almost inevitable when studying law or working within a stimulating legal environment.

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Attending an Arts and Social Science Summer School at Royal Holloway University expanded my understanding about what law involves as I attended a law lecture about refugees and how law plays a part in their lives which absolutely fascinated me. Visiting law firms including Reed Smith gave me an insight of what working in city law involves and meeting lawyers engaged me and gave me an aspiration to develop a career in law. I also attended a "working in the City" workshop which was based on Law and Accounting which I participated in mock interviews and group assessments which gave me an insight of what the recruitment process for city jobs would be like. I managed to complete The Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award, whilst taking on my studies which was something I have never accomplished before which developed my leadership skills and teamwork. Therefore, I would love to get involved in extra-curricular activities at university such as, joining a Law society which will develop my learning during my Law degree. I recently volunteered at the Hackney Wicked festival and at Parallel London which enabled me to develop my confidence and to take on responsibilities and become motivated which I can bring to university. Being a critical and independent thinker has organically enhanced not only during my studies but through work experience, for example having a placement at Step Forward as a Young Accessor allowed me to assess local youth services and give feedback which encourages quick thinking and constructive criticism.
