What is SCITT?

SCITT stands for School-Centered Initial Teacher Training. This postgraduate qualification is one of the most popular ways of gaining a QTS and become a teacher!

Unlike other routes to teach training, SCITT programmes are run by groups of local schools that focus on giving graduates practical teacher training that sees them learning on the job. Many of these courses allow you to gain your PGCE while you're completing your SCITT.

While completing your training, you'll get support from the schools you work in as well as mentors and peers.

What is the difference between SCITT and other routes to teaching?

SCITT vs PGCE

The difference between a SCITT and a PGCE course is in how you learn. SCITT is a school-based training program, where you'll be learning within the school to give you practical experience quickly.

A PGCE course is a university-led training course that includes more knowledge-based training in the form of lectures and seminars. As part of the course, you'll later complete at least two school placements. Your PGCE is also your teaching qualification which is internationally recognised. Many SCITT programmes will allow you to gain the PGCE qualification at the same time as SCITT.

SCITT vs School Direct

School Direct and SCITT are very similar in their hands-on approach to teacher training and both can offer you a PGCE qualification. The main difference is that SCITT awards a PGCE in a SCITT while those doing School Direct will have their PGCE awarded by a partner college or university.

There are also differences in funding available. With School Direct, you can receive a salary if you have three years of work experience and won't have to pay tuition fees. However, you won't be eligible for bursaries that SCITT students can get.

How long is a SCITT?

SCITT programmes are a year long. In that year, you will likely be placed in a couple of different schools within a local group to enhance your learning experience.

How to apply for a SCITT

You can apply for a SCITT through the UCAS Teacher Training Portal. Like your undergrad, you'll need to supply a personal statement along with two referees.

Once your application is accepted, you'll be invited for an interview. Here, you'll want to show your passion for teaching, confidence in working with children and motivation to complete your qualification.

Some schools may also ask you to complete an aptitude test but this will depend on the school groups' procedures.

SCITT entry requirements

To apply for a SCITT, you will need the following:

• At least a grade 4 / C in GCSE Maths
• At least a grade 4 / C in GCSE English (Literature or Language)
• At least a grade 4 / C in Science subjects if looking to teach primary school

As it's a postgraduate course, you'll need to hold a first degree. Most likely this is a 2:2 or above in a Bachelor's degree.

As part of the process, you will also need to undertake a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check to ensure you are safe to work with children.

We also advise having some work experience that involves working with children. This allows you to draw on experiences within your interview as well as show the schools you already have a passion and ability to work with kids.

How much does a SCITT cost?

The cost of your SCITT will depend on the provider, but you can expect it to cost around £9,000 for the year. You shouldn't worry too much about the cost of the SCITT as, like PGCE and PGDE programs, there are many bursary and grant options available. You may also be eligible for student finance, to cover your tuition fees and a maintenance loan.

Bursaries available

There are a few bursary options available depending on your subject and level of education achieved so far.

You are eligible for a bursary of around £26,000 if you have a PhD or Master's degree of a 2:2 or above in any of the following subjects:

• Physics
• Chemistry
• Maths
• Computing

There are also bursary options available for those who studied Geography, Modern or Ancient Languages, Biology, Design and Technology and English. The amount of bursary you can receive will vary.

Scholarships available

Scholarships are seen to offer higher amounts, with around £28,000 awarded to talented trainee teachers. You can find SCITT scholarships for the following subjects:

• Computing
• Chemistry
• Maths
• Physics

Your eligibility for any bursary, scholarship or grant will depend on you and the requirements for the funding. For instance, some scholarships may only be awarded to international students. You should also make sure to read the terms as some funding may affect your ability to secure student finance as well.

Can I get paid for a SCITT?

A SCITT is a non-salaried training. The funding options and student finance are there to support you through the year, ready to secure a salaried position right after you complete your training!
