What is an SVQ and what is it equivalent to?

What is an SVQ?

SVQ stands for Scottish Vocational Qualification. It's a work-based qualification you can take to show that you can do the job well and to the national industry standards. Unlike other higher education qualifications, the SVQ is completed outside of the classroom, with observations from assessors done on the job.

Completing an SVQ shows your competence, motivation and commitment to the role and industry you choose.

Are NVQs and SVQs the same?

An SVQ is the Scottish equivalent of the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). Both these qualifications are vocational, competence-based qualifications that use practical learning to develop your skills to do the job.

The content of both is based on the National Occupational Standards in the relevant field. The difference comes in that the regulations and standards may differ. In England and Northern Ireland, NVQs have the Regulated Qualifications Framework, while Scotland uses SQA to accredit the SVQ. The difference is very subtle and likely not something you'll notice while completing. Which you study will depend on where you choose to study.

The other difference is the levels - the SVQ is 5 levels whereas there are 8 for the NVQ.

What are the SVQ levels equivalent to?

Each SVQ is recognised by the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), with each SVQ level having an equivalent SCQF level.

Each SVQ level tests your ability in the workplace and prepares you for elements of work that other qualifications may not. Here's a breakdown of each level and equivalent qualifications:

SVQ Level SCQF equivalent Other equivalent qualifications
SVQ Level 1 Level 4 SCQF Skills for Work National 4
SVQ Level 2 Level 5 SCQF Skills for Work National 5
SVQ Level 3 Level 6 and 7 SCQF Skills for Work Higher or Higher National Certificate
SVQ Level 4 Level 8 and 9 SCQF Higher National Diploma or an undergraduate degree
SVQ Level 5 Level 11 SCQF Master's Degree

Who can do an SVQ?

SVQs are an accessible option in Scotland for those looking to upskill before they enter the working world or are looking to reach a higher level at work. Typically SVQ students are:

  • Apprentice-level applicants
  • Those looking to receive a certified qualification to prove their level of knowledge
  • Used as part-time training while working in a similar sector
  • Those looking to qualify in a practical subject

Many SVQ providers don't require you to have any previous qualifications to take part, though if you have some experience in the subject you're taking, it may see you move up the SVQ levels much faster.

There is no age limit on an SVQ either. They can be studied full-time or part-time and can be taken at any point in your career journey!

How to get an SVQ qualification

An SVQ qualification is gained by passing your assessments and reaching the required standard of work set out in the Regulated Qualifications Framework. Once your assessor feels you've hit the required level of competency, they'll sign you off as complete!

How are SVQs assessed?

SVQ assessments come in two parts. These are:

  • Portfolio assessment. This will include evidence of your work, tasks completed and any documentation of achievements.
  • Observations. Assessors will come to watch you while you work to make sure you're reaching the required standard.

You'll likely meet with your assessor once a month to discuss your work to ensure you're on track. Your assessor will also be in contact with your managers and co-workers to gain more insight into how you work.

How long do SVQs take?

There is no exact time frame - it can depend on the level of SVQ and how you choose to study. SVQ levels 3 and 4 can take up to 12 months while level 2 SVQs usually take a maximum of 9 months. How long they take will very much depend on how long it takes for your assessor to feel confident that you've reached the required standard.
